Week of January 15

This week in pictures (left to right, top to bottom):

1. Lyngdals had an extra ticket at the last minute so I went to Funny Girl at the Orpheum with them. The female lead had a great voice. I’m curious to watch the movie.

2. The next day was my Wednesday date with Jo and Jenny. Between getting home late and leaving early for Becker I was a little sleep deprived, but it worked out. Totally worth it. 🥰 She’s 10 weeks here.

3. On Saturday I took a wheel throwing pottery class with Deb Lindahl and Lisa Bickford. It’s harder than it looks; certainly harder than a 2 hour class can remedy, but it was fun and in a couple weeks I can go pick up my two mediocre pots, all glazed and ready to become pencil holders. I would have taken a pic, but it’s a nasty mess and washing wasn’t convenient.

4. At my last confession I was directed to try more effort at Mass prep (although how that will keep me from being distracted by the GIGANTIC SCREENS, I’m not sure). Anyway, I am indeed prepping better by spending time with the scripture and a Lectio exercise that is funneling into these little images. It’s like journaling, but not the kind I hate doing. 3 weeks for 3, so far.

5. The table is covered with papercraft stuff being transformed into cute cards. I’m pretty sure my traditional Super Bowl party will be happening, hopefully with Jen.

6. I finished my 2nd smocking project- this time a dress for Thea. I’m finding the hardest part is turning a smocking project into a sewing project. There are no patterns made specifically for that and it’s a challenge to risk several hours of embroidery to a make it up pattern.

Bird Nest Card

I used instructions from this Wreath Fold Card

To make my own version.

Fits in a 6.5 x 5” envelope.
Used a 2.5” circle die to cut out the center of the card base.
2” and 2.875” together to make the circle supporting the nest.
Medium dark brown and Kraft paper cuts of the wreath/nest pieces
Glued it all in place and blotted on brown “Vintage Photo” distress ink.
Bird is navy and grey, also coated in distress ink.
He’s glued on with foam core tape with a little knot of raffia underneath.

Baby card

Die cuts
Bib hangs loose and is “tied”  on with embroidery floss in a clover hitch through the top holes and glued down on the back.

Making Cards

It must be January because the table is a mess of paper and paper tools. Because coming up with designs is harder than making the cards, I’m recording ideas here.

Fun birthday design. I found the idea on instagram. Basically, think of the starting page as a 5x3 grid. The big one is 2”x2” squares, and the others are 1.5 x 1.75” rectangles. Two of these are going to February birthday grandkids.

Simple embossing folder and die cut numbers.

This one is a pop-up fold. Embroidery floss tassel, die cut letters, triangle pocket for cash inside. I started with a 9.5” square of letter weight to get a 5” finished card. Instructions are here.
